The cases with tuberculosis were lowered thanks to the vaccine that has been used for over 100 years.

It is safe and today it is also being used for the treatment of bladder cancer. At the 75th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association was announced that on 150 people that are dealing with advanced stage of type-1 diabetes will receive the vaccine by the FDA and to see the results.

The immune system is destroying the cells that produce insulin when there is type-1 diabetes which means that the body is not able to produce enough insulin. Those cells that are making those problems are known as T cells and the T cells will be eliminated with the help of that vaccine. The patients that received the vaccine had increase of a substance known as tumor necrosis factor in their bodies and that resulted in destroying the T cells that were the reason for not enough insulin in the body.

In a previous study, patients received the tuberculosis vaccine twice in a month and the results were that the T cells were completely eliminated and that in some cases people started secreting their own insulin.

The director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Immunobiology Laboratory in Boston, Dr. Denise Faustman is very happy with the results that the vaccine is showing.

Dr. Denise said that they want to make a regimen that will be able to treat type-1 diabetes even when it is in its advanced stages so they are going to work with patients that were dealing with this disease for many years. Their goal is to make lasting therapeutic response. New study will be made similar to the last one, where people aged between 18 and 60 will receive the vaccine twice in a month and after that once in 4 years.

The effects of the BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) on children dealing with diabetes aged between 5 and 18 were tested and it showed that the BCG vaccine will not keep the beta-cell function and it will not increase the remission rate in children.
